As per a report by MediaNama, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that at least 37 journalists were detained while covering protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 10 and 11: 35 in Delhi, one in Ahmedabad and one in Pune. CPJ said several were also assaulted, based on its review of news reports, interviews and verified social media posts. It quoted a senior Delhi Police officer, speaking to The Hindu, as saying some journalists may have been detained because they were working near protesters and did not move away; CPJ said it had emailed Delhi Police for comment and had received no immediate response.
Separately, MediaNama reports, citing The Economic Times, that Delhi Police's cybercrime monitoring department issued more than 200 takedown orders through the Sahyog portal ahead of the October 10 protest, against a usual volume of about 40 a week. MediaNama describes the orders as issued under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act rather than Section 69A, which carries procedural safeguards. It also reports that the Instagram account of Molitics, with about 567,000 followers, was removed "for legal reasons" and that the X account of Shyam Meera Singh was withheld in India.
