As per a report by ABC7, Judge Francis Mathew of the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe entered judgment on October 21 ordering Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion. A jury found last month that Meta was liable for deceiving users about privacy and content moderation on Facebook, with more than 43 million violations of the state's consumer protection law; the case stems from a 2021 lawsuit that followed the Cambridge Analytica scandal. ABC7 reports that the state sought $35 billion to $40 billion and Meta proposed about $3.4 billion, and that Meta plans to appeal. Attorney General Raúl Torrez said the money will go to the state's education fund.

PPC Land, which reviewed the judgment, reports that the jury returned its verdict on September 25 after a 13-day trial and found 43,899,720 violations, that the statutory maximum of $5,000 per violation comes to $219.5 billion, and that the award carries interest at 15% a year until paid. It also reports that the court reserved on injunctive relief pending further briefing, so no conduct remedies have been ordered yet, and that Meta argued the award would violate due process.
