As per a report by MediaNama, regulations published in Turkey's Official Gazette on October 10 bar social network providers from serving children under 15 from November 1, 2026. Asia Plus, citing Anadolu Agency, quotes the rule as saying that "Social network providers may not provide services to children who have not reached the age of 15." MediaNama reports that platforms must check ages using a token issued through Turkey's e-Devlet government portal, which confirms whether a user meets the 15 or 18 threshold without revealing a name or exact age to the platform. Existing users must be verified by March 31, 2027, after which platforms must close accounts belonging to children under 15.
For users aged 15 to 17, MediaNama reports, accounts must stay private, and live streaming, behaviour-based profiling and personalised commercial advertisements are prohibited, along with features that could encourage addictive use. Platforms must offer parental controls covering screen time, account settings, location sharing and purchases. MediaNama says violations may draw penalties under Turkey's existing internet law, with platforms given a reasonable opportunity to remedy breaches; it does not name an enforcement body or give fine amounts. Turkish Minute notes that the ban comes amid criticism from rights groups over restrictions on freedom of expression in Turkey.
