The Data Protection Commission opened its inquiry into Google's processing of users' location data and, in a decision announced September 21, 2026, imposed an administrative fine of €403 million on Google Ireland Limited. The inquiry examined three features that were in operation during the period the DPC assessed, from May 25, 2018 to February 4, 2020: Web & App Activity, Location History and Location Accuracy. The DPC found infringements of the GDPR's transparency requirements across all three features, and found failures of lawfulness and fairness in how Web & App Activity and Location History processed location data, an accountability failure concerning Location Accuracy, and retention of some location data for longer than necessary under Web & App Activity and Location History. Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle said location data can enhance online services but can also reveal significant private information about a person. The DPC ordered Google to bring its processing into compliance with the GDPR within six months. The press release does not state whether Google intends to appeal, and does not address any Indian angle.
